The Vault
The only room in the house built around a table rather than a bed.
A six-foot billiard table stands in the middle of the floor with a full set of cues and balls, and everything else is arranged to leave it room. The bed sits along the stone wall, deliberately out of the way; the sofa opens for two more. It is a room that works as well at midnight as it does at nine in the morning.
The original masonry was left exposed rather than replastered — you can still read where the openings were once wider. Everything soft was added afterwards: timber built for the room, a rug over the boards, a fireplace against the stone, and mirrors hung along the far wall like a collection somebody kept.
The kitchen is set into the side wall — enough to cook breakfast properly, not enough to become a chore. Dogs and cats are welcome here; of the three rooms, this is the one the house says yes to most often.

The same walls, furnished twice

This floor sat above what was, for decades, a working part of the port quarter — the streets below carried goods between the harbour and the market, and the buildings above carried the people who moved them. The room's proportions come from that period: high, plain and built to hold weight. During the restoration the walls were opened back to the original stone rather than replastered, which is why the surface behind the billiard table is uneven in a way no modern wall would be.
